Dr. Alp Sehirlioglu

Dr. Alp Sehirlioglu

Dr. Alp Sehirlioglu received his Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at Middle East Technical University (Ankara, Turkey) in 1997. He finished his M.S at Alfred University in 2000 and his Ph.D. at University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC) in 2005. He is currently an Associate Professor at Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Alp Sehirlioglu received several awards including the NSF CAREER award for the project "Controlled processing of self-assembly in single crystal oxide films" in 2018, AFOSR Young Investigator Program (YIP) Award for the project titled “Oxide Based Heterointerfaces for Extreme Environment Electronics” in 2011, Charles F. Lucks Award, by International Thermal Conductivity Conference, Inc., 2009 and the Young Alumnus Award from UIUC in 2016. He was the plenary presenter at the 30th International Thermal Conductivity Conference and 18th International Thermal Expansion Symposium. Dr. Alp Sehirlioglu is an active member of the American Ceramic Society (ACerS) and a senior member Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) - Ultrasonic, Ferroelectrics, Frequency Modulation (UFFC). He was a founding member of the newly-formed Young Professionals Network at ACerS and served as the co-chair for 2012-14. He is currently serving as the chair of the ACerS Northern Ohio section, secratary of the Electronic Division and is an associate editor at Journal of the American Ceramic Society. He has also been serving in the Ferroelectrics Committee at IEEE since 2011, as the publications chair since 2016 and UFFC AdCom member since 2018. Dr. Alp Sehirlioglu has over thirty papers, gave twenty nine invited talks and seminars. His research focus is on energy conversion materials with emphasis on extreme environments. He is currently working on high temperature piezoelectrics, 2D materials and hetero-intefaces and structural batteries.

Benjamin Hirt

Benjamin Hirt

Benjamin Hirt is a graduate of the Honors Tutorial College at Ohio University, where he received his B.S. in Physics in 2018. Benjamin completed an internship at NRL in Washington, DC and was a student researcher with Dr. Kordesch. His undergraduate research was studying the emission of thermionic cathodes. He explored how additives affected the emission at the surface of the cathodes. Benjamin is now pursuing his PhD in Material Science and Engineering at Case Western Reserve University under the supervision of Dr. Alp Sehirlioglu. Ben's research interest is creating piezoelectric materials for use in aerospace technology.
